Gallery: Fotos espía: Vano motor BMW M3 Share TweetFotos espía: ¡Descubrimos el nuevo motor del BMW M3! originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 03:36:00 EST. Low mileage. Being able to say that a car has been sparingly used can add a significant number of digits to the sale price. Should Jack Riddell ever sell his 1967 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2, though, that phrase will be barred from his ad. Riddell bought the Lambo used in 1972, and using it as his daily driver over the 40 years since, he's taken it past the 250,000-mile mark. Ridley and his "V12 TORO" stopped by Jay Leno's Garage and Jay, an obvious Lamborghini fan - there's a Countach and a pair of Miura coupes in the background - pored over it. Then, of course, he and Riddell took it out and put more miles on it. There's a heap of Lambo love and history, along with Leno, in the video below.Continue reading Jay Leno drives world's highest-mileage LamborghiniJay Leno drives world's highest-mileage Lamborghini originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 19:58:00 EST. Posted: 13 Sep 2012 04:23 PM PDT ![]() Fisker might have received complete $529m loan under Paul Ryan's plan Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Legislation and Policy, USA, Fisker Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan might have supported full disbursement of the U.S. Energy Department's planned $529 million loan to extended-range plug-in vehicle maker Fisker Automotive. Then again, he might not have. Ah, politics. Recently, Ryan has joined fellow Republicans in blasting DOE loans to "green" technology companies like Fisker and solar-panel producer Solyndra. But, in a 2008 letter, he appeared to support giving the DOE enough "flexibility" to make its planned $529 million loan to the California-based automaker, according to Delaware Online. Of course, Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck denied that the candidate changed his views, saying that the funding would've been contingent on Fisker being "approved as a viable recipient." We're not sure what that means either, since the DOE loan was, indeed, originally approved. The DOE granted Fisker the $529 million loan in 2010 but has since frozen all but about $200 million of it because Fisker failed to meet certain predetermined production quotas for its Karma model. In late June, Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Chuck Grassley (R-IO) sent a letter to DOE secretary Steven Chu questioning the $529 million loan in part because of Qatar's ownership stake in the company. Two months earlier, ex-Fisker chairman and current investor Ray Lane blamed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for the delays in the DOE funding, saying Romney, the son of former American Motors chief George Romney, mistakenly grouped Fisker with Solyndra. Fisker had planned to take over an old GM factory in Delaware to produce the Fisker Atlantic, but those plans have been put on hold, in part because all the loan money did not come through.Fisker might have received complete $529m loan under Paul Ryan's plan originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 18:45:00 EST. Posted: 13 Sep 2012 03:52 PM PDT ![]() GM recycles something called Sonozorb into coats, sleeping bags for the houseless Filed under: Green Culture, Manufacturing/Plants, GM For automakers pursuing sustainability initiatives - things like powering plants with solar panels and recycling existing car components - General Motors is stepping it up a notch. GM is working with a Detroit nonprofit group to turn leftover auto materials into warm coats and sleeping bags for the area's houseless. The recycling campaign was inspired by Veronika Scott, an Empowerment Plan leader at the College for Creative Studies. Scott had started a project to design clothing for the houseless using recyclable materials. While working on a local shoot for a Planet Green cable TV production, she met John Bradburn, GM's manager of waste-reduction efforts. Bradburn told her about Sonozorb, which is a highly oil-absorbent insulating material used to fit into car door cavities and vehicle compartments for sound absorption. GM had been reusing Sonozorb at its plants and the material was also used to clean up the Gulf oil spill in 2010, some of which was even recycled into production Chevrolet Volt vehicles. It made sense for Scott to request donation of the material from GM, and the company delivered 2,000 yards of the materials. That was enough to make about 400 coats from extra Sonozorb chunks that came from the production of Chevy Malibu and Buick Verano sedans. Auto supplier GDC works on the project, too, reprocessing leftover material into quilt-like fabric for the coats that also transform into sleeping bags. Scott employs about seven formerly homeless women who are paid to craft about 150 coats a month. The coats are sent to homeless outreach groups in Detroit and other destinations, including Ohio, New York, and San Francisco. The donations tie into GM's commitment to reduce waste. Last year, the company recycled or reused 2.5 million metric tons at its facilities worldwide. It's also a good way to service the local community. "We're reaching out and helping others," Bradburn told the Detroit News.Continue reading GM recycles something called Sonozorb into coats, sleeping bags for the houselessGM recycles something called Sonozorb into coats, sleeping bags for the houseless originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 18:02:00 EST. Posted: 13 Sep 2012 03:52 PM PDT ![]() Official: BMW Concept Active Tourer hints at future plug-in 1 Series Filed under: Concept Cars, Hybrid, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, BMW Earlier today, we posted a picture of what was referred to as the 1 Series Gran Turismo, but as it turns out, this car is actually the BMW Concept Active Tourer that is being unveiled later this month at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. As a growing number of automakers continue to expand into this premium small car market, the production version of this concept car could be in a unique position with its ultra-fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain. Those who loved the lines of last year's BMW i3 concept should warm to the styling and proportions of this new concept vehicle. Instead of the copious amounts of transparent body panels, the Concept Active Tourer gives a better indication of what this future model will look like with the front receiving a heavy influence of the new 2012 3 Series sedan - namely the long hood - and the rest of the hatchback looking like a scaled-down version of a BMW crossover. It is rumored that the production version of this concept vehicle could still wear the 1 Series GT nameplate. At the heart of the Concept Active Tourer is BMW's new eDrive plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three with a lithium-ion powered electric system. The total system output is rated at 190 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. More importantly, BMW says this system has an all-electric driving range of close to 20 miles, but the automaker did not give specifics on battery charge times or what types of motors it plans to use. In true BMW fashion, acceleration is still pretty important, and it has the ability to get from zero to 62 miles per hour in under eight seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. Being a plug-in hybrid, this concept sips fuel with fuel consumption being just 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers (or about 94 miles per gallon) which is comparable to the Toyota Prius Plug-In's rating of 2.2 L/100 km. The true innovation of the Concept Active Tourer is its interior, and while BMW hasn't provided interior shots as of this writing, the company spelled out what to expect in its lengthy press release. Some of the highlights include exciting new cabin technology such as the "Cool Shade" roof and numerous display screens. Like the Mercedes-Benz Magic Sky Control roof, BMW's new "Cool Shade" panoramic roof can change opacity at the push of a button, and it can even has a selectable leaf-like design for a special effect. Drivers can get information from the eight-inch gauge cluster display, the optional full color head-up display or the massive 10.25-inch center stack display screen. The HUD projects onto a retractable glass screen and displays information such as vehicle speed, navigation instructions and other warnings. In terms of its size, the Concept Active Tourer is about as long as the current 1 Series with an overall length of 171 inches and a wheelbase of 105 inches, but it sits about five inches taller and is four inches wider. Scroll down for the lengthy (but information-packed) press release.Continue reading BMW Concept Active Tourer hints at future plug-in 1 SeriesBMW Concept Active Tourer hints at future plug-in 1 Series originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 18:00:00 EST. As the recent Supreme Court decision commonly referred to as "Citizens United" only underscored, money has always played a part in politics. Posted: 13 Sep 2012 01:45 PM PDT ![]() Spy Shots: 2014 BMW M3 engine revealed [w/video] Filed under: Spy Photos, Performance, Videos, BMW We've just received a set of spy photography that, for once, is focused on what is inside the car rather than what is visible on the exterior. That's exciting stuff, as the car in question is the next-generation BMW M3, and the engine in question is the stuff of great import where enthusiast drivers and Bimmerfiles are concerned. The most important fact revealed from these shots, is that the 2014 M3 will be rocking an inline-six engine in place of the high-revving V8 from the current car. That news is welcome on two fronts: it represents a return to the engine configuration that we most associate with BMW performance, and it suggests a further development of the six-pot we've come to love in so many of the brand's current models. The photos confirm that the engine is likely two have turbochargers at least (there are two pipes feeding the intercooler), and they do not contravene rumors that a third, electric turbo lies just out of sight. Displacement figures for the engine still remain a bit of a mystery. It has been reported that the next M3 could be as voluminous as 3.3 liters, though it's more likely, based on a BMW tech report claiming use of optimized, 500cc-cylinders, that the total size is 3.0 liters. In any event, everyone's best guess about power output hovers around the 450-horsepower mark. Please also note the very sturdy strut tower bracing that is visible under the hood (as if you could miss it). Forego any worries that the new hot 3 Series will be anything less than rock-solid mid-corner. When you're finished browsing our photo gallery, please to continue on below, where we've posted some video footage of the 2014 M3 testing in Germany. Engine pics go better with engine sounds, no? Posted: 13 Sep 2012 01:45 PM PDT ![]() Engineers putting wasted engine heat to good use: improving fuel economy Filed under: Emerging Technologies, Chrysler, Ford Gasoline-powered, internal combustion engines are notoriously inefficient. Some estimates say as much as 70 percent of the fuel's energy is lost to friction and heat. An Automotive News story has engineers saying that only three percent is due to friction. To engineers, that's a huge pot of low-hanging, fuel-efficiency fruit.Chrysler and Dana Holding Corp. have developed a "thermal management system" (highlighted in blue in the photo above) for the 2013 Dodge Ram that takes advantage of some of that heat. The truck's engine coolant is re-routed to bring the 2013 Dodge Ram's transmission to optimum operating temperature more quickly. When cold, honey-like transmission fluid drags on the powertrain. The sooner it warms up, the less fuel is wasted. The company claims the system improves fuel economy by two percent. The system may be adapted for other Chrysler vehicles in the future. Similar systems from Dana are also being used on the Ford Edge where it adds about one percent to fuel economy. Since a vehicle's engine also needs heat to operate efficiently, catalytic converter supplier Tenneco is working on a system that uses exhaust heat to warm the gooey transmission fluid. For the future, though, Tenneco hopes to use waste heat to eliminate power-sucking alternators. The company is experimenting with thermocouple technology to convert heat directly into electricity. Current thermocouple hardware can convert one to three percent of exhaust heat into electricity. Tenneco says if it can improve that to as much as five percent, enough current can be generated to charge your car's battery with no drain on the engine. Standing in the way of thermocouple tech use on cars is its super high cost. The company hopes within six years to bring the price down 90 percent.Engineers putting wasted engine heat to good use: improving fuel economy originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 15:58:00 EST. Posted: 13 Sep 2012 12:07 PM PDT ![]() Official: Volkswagen Beetle R-Line cops an attitude Filed under: Coupe, Hatchback, Volkswagen, Design/StyleVolkswagen is offering all sorts of new Beetle models for 2013, but one that we won't be getting here in the U.S. is the new 2013 Volkswagen Beetle R-Line. Giving a glimpse at what the future might have in store for the high-performance Beetle R, this new R-Line model is defined by its sporty looks. The R-Line model is actually available in two different packages. For buyers just searching for a meaner-looking Beetle, the starting R-Line option offers an exterior upgrade package. The package has features like a more aggressive front fascia with black inserts, a rear diffuser and 18-inch "Twister" alloy wheels. 19-inch polished and painted alloy wheels are available as an upgrade, too. There is also an interior R-Line package that brings two-tone sport seats with an "active-breathing" fabric. This interior upgrade also boasts R-Design logos on the leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel, embroidered onto the front headrests and rendered in dark metallic inlays throughout the cabin. Full black leather seats are optional interior fare, as well. Choosing just the exterior package will run €1,290 (around $1,665 USD) while the full interior and exterior R-Line package will cost €1,675 ($2,162 USD), and both can be equipped on the Beetle 1.4 TSI or the Beetle TDI. While VW doesn't have any plans to bring the Beetle R-Line to the U.S., the Beetle TDI and Beetle Fender Edition are new for 2013 and the all-new Beetle Cabriolet will be making its debut at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show.
