Toyota Prius Solution: When you're dead, you can't pollute
Filed under: Etc., Green Culture, Hybrid, Toyota, Videos Let's make this clear from the get-go: we know this is satire, courtesy of The Onion. Of course, like all good comedy, the idea for the new, fictional Toyota Prius Solution model contains a grain of truth. After all, if you aren't alive, you really can't add to the world's environmental problems any more. Any questions? Obviously a riff on the whole "Pious" side of the Prius-driver stereotype as well as taking blind environmentalism to its logical extreme, the Prius Solution manages to put a bloody twist on the Prius "family" branding that the automaker has been promoting since early 2010. It's kind of gross, so you've been warned. That said, anyone who's been punctured backbone-to-sternum also can't work to solve world's environmental problems, but that's a discussion for another time. Enough talk. Check out the video below.Continue reading Toyota Prius Solution: When you're dead, you can't polluteToyota Prius Solution: When you're dead, you can't pollute originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 20:01:00 EST. Video: Polaris RZR 4 turned into 640-HP monster truck
Filed under: Aftermarket, Videos, Specialty, Off-Road When is a monster truck not really a monster truck at all? Well, looking past the fact that we don't know of any competition-ready monster trucks that actually have such trucky items as a working pickup bed or even a passenger seat, perhaps the answer is when it's made from a Polaris RZR. A company called High Lifter has created a monster RZR using as many stock Polaris parts as possible. According to the company, that includes the frame (buried inside a bunch of custom tubing), body, seats and steering wheel. Our understanding is that power comes from a 640-horsepower GM small block mated to a Powerglide automatic transmission. We've added three videos for you to watch below, where you'll see the monster RZR put through a short series of preliminary tests. As you'll see, the beast is a little bit tippy, and the team has since added sway bars. Which is good, because the bigger they are... well, you know the rest.Continue reading Polaris RZR 4 turned into 640-HP monster truckPolaris RZR 4 turned into 640-HP monster truck originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 19:59:00 EST. Video: Ford pits Focus ST against its rivals... including a BMW M3
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Hatchback, BMW, Ford Just about every car in the industry has a short list of natural rivals. The way we see it, the cars going head-to-head with the 2013 Ford Focus ST are the Mazdaspeed3, Subaru WRX and Volkswagen GTI. Consider: each of these models has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and is offered in a five-door hatchback shape. One car we wouldn't naturally think of as a competitor to the Focus ST, though, is the BMW M3. Ford, on the other hand, seems to think the two models can be stacked up against one another... well, enough at least to include BMW's V8-powered screamer in its latest web video for the ST. Here are some stats: The Focus ST boasts 252 horsepower, 270 pound-feed of torque and costs $24,495. The BMW M3 pumps out 414 horses, 295 lb-ft and gouges the wallet to the tune of $62,295... not to mention the fact that it has two doors and a trunk instead of hatch. Not much in common, then. Curious to see how Ford pitches the Focus ST against the BMW M3? Check out the video below.Continue reading Ford pits Focus ST against its rivals... including a BMW M3Ford pits Focus ST against its rivals... including a BMW M3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 19:24:00 EST. Report: AM General to offer civilian Humvee kit car
Filed under: SUV, Hummer, Military, Diesel, Off-Road For anyone feeling nostalgic about the passing of the Hummer brand, or the actual wartime vehicle that inspired it, now is your chance to own a version of the original HMMWV, albeit without an engine. After a 12-year hiatus from the civilian vehicle market, AM General is reportedly set to offer a kit-car of the C-Series Humvee. The kit will conform to U.S. government regulations and has been made possible by a deal with General Motors. The kit costs $59,000 - and you still need an engine. A likely favorite would be a Duramax Diesel V8 and Allison transmission combination, as was found on the H1 Alpha. AM General estimates that an owner could buy the kit Humvee and outfit a powerplant and transmission for $75,000. Not bad, considering that H1 Alpha has an MSRP of $140,000 in 2005. How is this possible? If you recall, GM was trying to unload the Hummer brand to Chinese-based Sichuan-Tengzhong, among other suitors. As we all know, a deal never happened and the brand rumbled off into the sunset. The deal with AM General worked so that the military Humvee producer could offer a vehicle to the public as long as it was fundamentally different from the H1. By offering a kit car, they apparently end-around much of the legal confines. But that also means are other setbacks. The final product will not look like the civilian Hummer H1, and it will not have niceties like interior trim, power locks, door mounted mirrors, or even hard doors. It will simply be a four-seat, soft-top, soft door vehicle. AM General will offer 'add-on' factory options such as the Central Tire Inflation System, rocker protection, and potentially two-piece beadlock wheels. As the story over at Hummer Guy puts it, "just remember - its a Humvee, not a Hummer." AM General to offer civilian Humvee kit car originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 18:51:00 EST. ETC: GMO crops so tough that farmers are turning to Kevlar tractor tires
Filed under: Truck, Etc., Technology, Work Farming is one of the most difficult ways to earn a living. You'd think that with all the innovations mankind has developed over the centuries, we could make farmers' lives easier. But as it turns out, sometimes miracles of modern science make things tougher. Literally. Take genetically modified organisms (GMO) for instance. For now, let's ignore the controversy over its safety, usefulness and ethical issues. The main issue for those guys actually growing and harvesting the stuff is much more practical. As it turns out, corn modified to stand tall and tough against pests is also wreaking havoc on tractor tires. Mark Newhall of Farm Show Magazine tells American Public Media's Marketplace that after the stalks are cut during harvest, the leftover stubs are like "having a field of little spears." So instead of tractor tires lasting the usual five to six years, they're getting chewed up after just one or two years. One tractor tire can cost thousands of dollars, and some tractors have as many as eight tires. How does a modern farmer fight back against a genetically modified enemy intent on destroying the very thing his business rides on? The same way our military defends against its enemies: Kevlar. While these augmented tractor tires can't be cheap, they should at least outlast their thin-skinned counterparts. The use of Kevlar in tires might seem extravagant, but in fact it's very appropriate. The material was invented in 1964 by DuPont during its search for a strong, lightweight material for, you guessed it, tires. Take a listen to Marketplace's story with the player below.GMO crops so tough that farmers are turning to Kevlar tractor tires originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 18:15:00 EST. Ecotality offer free charging stations to EV drivers in three large U.S. cities
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy The City of Brotherly Love will provide some extra affection for owners of Chevrolet Volts and Nissan Leafs. Philadelphia has become the latest metropolitan area to be included in the public-private EV Project designed to give away Blink home-charging stations to plug-in vehicle drivers of cars like the Leaf and Volt. The car owners will also get an station-installation credit of $400 as part of the project, which also involves local utility company PECO. The EV Project was launched in 2009 with a $99.8 million dollar grant to ECOtality from the U.S. Department of Energy with the goal of distributing about 14,000 home-charging stations. The Energy Department funded another $15 million for the project in 2010. So far, the EV Project has collected plug-in driving data from more than 33 million miles of electric-powered driving. Ecotality is also offering similar deals in Chicago and Atlanta.Continue reading Ecotality offer free charging stations to EV drivers in three large U.S. citiesEcotality offer free charging stations to EV drivers in three large U.S. cities originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 18:10:00 EST. Report: German state to float $312M loan guarantee for Nürburgring
Filed under: Motorsports, Europe, Government/Legal, Earnings/Financials The government of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate is set to make hundreds of million of euros available to the Nürburgring. This will guarantee that a loan be partially paid, making it possible for the Nürburgring to continue to operate. According to Germany's Deutsche Welle, officials in the West German state came to the decision to keep the track afloat during a special meeting of the state legislature's budget and finance committee. The loan, in the amount of €254 million ($312 million) enables Nürburgring GmbH, who operates the track, to service a €330 million loan ($402M). That payment will allow the track to keep operating. According to the report, several members of German government pushed for the delay of this move, citing that such a maneuver could be illegal under European law. The wold-famous racetrack has fallen on hard times, and this bailout appears to be essential in its bid to stay afloat. The original loan taken out by the track's investors was to build a supporting mall and a roller coaster. Neither of these attractions has proven successful, leaving investors to plead for a bailout from the EU. No word on how this will effect Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone and his commitment to "do everything" to save the 'Ring. If still committed, it likely just became a $312 million more manageable undertaking for Bernie to do so.German state to float $312M loan guarantee for Nürburgring originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 17:30:00 EST. Video: Man being dragged by pickup calls 911
Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety, Videos We're not exactly sure what to say about this video, other than to point out yet again that the world can be a messed-up place to live. A man walking in the parking lot of what we think is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, was hit by another motorist in a white truck. We can't say whether it was on purpose or malicious... until the driver seemingly chose not to stop and make sure the man he hit was uninjured. But wait, it gets worse. The driver of the truck fled from the scene with the man attached to the truck bed. We're not entirely sure how the victim was attached - possibly by clothing caught between the bodywork - but he apparently had enough freedom of movement that he could take out his cell phone and call 911. The driver of the truck was arrested for a litany of crimes, and the victim managed to escape with nothing more than cuts and bruises. Oh, and a great story to tell his grandkids. See security footage of the event in the news video below.Continue reading Man being dragged by pickup calls 911Man being dragged by pickup calls 911 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 16:59:00 EST. Report: Mercedes shells out $618,000 over lemon law'd $56K E-Class
Filed under: Car Buying, Sedan, Government/Legal, Mercedes-Benz, LuxuryMercedes-Benz has made a payment of $618,000 by order of the Wisconsin Supreme Court for a lemon law case from 2005. In the case, a Wisconsin businessman, Marco Marquez purchased an E-Class, which turned out to be defective. By defective, Marquez's lawyer, lemon law-specialist Vince Megna says the owner needed the E320 to be repaired repeatedly, eventually seeking a refund. The court awarded Marquez $482,000 in 2005, but Mercedes-Benz argued over having to pay, claiming that Marquez and his attorney delayed the motion to trigger something called "double damages." According to reports, in Wisconsin, an automaker has 30 days to respond to a lemon law claim and provide a refund if it is deemed necessary. If it fails to meet that 30-day deadline, the car owner may be entitled to damages worth twice the value of the vehicle. Mercedes argued that Megna stalled in order to trigger that double penalty. In a 6-1 decision, the Supreme Court upheld the verdict, requiring Mercedes-Benz to pay the full amount. Adjusted for inflation, that number comes to $618,000. And there's still the matter of more than $200,000 in legal fees accrued since 2005. Megna had named Concours Motors in Glendale, WI as well as five other Mercedes-Benz dealers as garnishees in his motion, but Mercedes-Benz stepped in to foot the bill in the end.Mercedes shells out $618,000 over lemon law'd $56K E-Class originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 16:31:00 EST.
Electric vehicle fan says solar-powered EVs cut monthly driving costs in half
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, BMW, Honda The solar panels are a big help. Our friend Peder Norby says his family's monthly transportation expenses for his two electric cars - a BMW ActiveE and Honda Fit EV are about half those for the two gas cars he and his wife used to drive. Norby calculates that the ActivE and Fit EV cost a combined $1,082 a month in lease payments and insurance, compared to $2,031 in monthly expenses for the now-sold 2005 Volvo S60R and 2005 Infiniti G35. The Norby's previous $450-a-month in refueling costs have been completely eliminated by the fact that the couple's house is solar-powered. The EVs also create savings in the form of zero repair and maintenance expenses (the EVs are virtually new) and lower insurance costs. The couple, which this year paid off their six-year-old solar-power system through their lower utility bills, brag that they've driven "52,000 miles powered by sunshine."Electric vehicle fan says solar-powered EVs cut monthly driving costs in half originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 15:49:00 EST. Report: Is Lamborghini the real owner of Ducati?
Filed under: Performance, Europe, Audi, Lamborghini, Earnings/Financials, Motorcycle Will the real owner of Ducati please stand up? It seems things are not as cut-and-dry as we once understood. Audi has just released its 2012 Interim Financial Report, and there is an interesting little bit on its acquisition of Ducati. It seems that not only was the performance motorbike producer purchased for less than previously stated, but it's technically not even owned by Audi. In the breakdown from Asphaltandrubber.com, the Italian two-wheel purveyor was purchases for €747 million (or $980 million), less than the $1.1 billion at which Ducati was previously estimated. Even more interesting is that Ducati appears to have actually been acquired by Lamborghini. So, while Ducati falls under the Audi umbrella, it it technically is owned by Lamborghini. This news makes sense of the appointment of Ducati CEO Gabriele del Torchio to the Lamborghini board of directors. There are two major outcomes from this maneuver. One, it keeps the Italian motorcycle brand (technically) in Italian hands. Two, with the emissions crackdown from the EU, putting a fleet of fuel-sipping motorcycles under Lambo's roof can throw off the curve and ease the heat from european officials. Is Lamborghini the real owner of Ducati? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Aug 2012 15:44:00 EST.
