Gallery: Noble M600 2011 Share TweetNoble piensa en un M600 descapotable originally appeared on Autoblog Español on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 03:36:00 EST. Vervuilende auto's volgend jaar verboden in Utrecht
Video: Watch how an Ariel Atom 300 defines trackday perfection
Filed under: Performance, Videos, Specialty, MISC It has no roof, no windshield and no doors. It doesn't matter. The Ariel Atom is the absolute perfect way to experience the simple pleasure of a day at the race track on four wheels. Though it's available with as many as 500 horsepower, even the 300-hp model is able to accelerate from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds. That's impressive, to say the least, and the best news is that the rest of the car's statistics are just as amazing, thanks to a fully adjustable suspension system, sticky rubber at all four corners and powerful brakes. In other words, the Atom 300 has everything you need to go fast at a race track and nothing you don't... and it's even possible to get it registered for the street. Watch the video below to find out what makes Car and Driver suggest that the Atom "may be one of the least practical cars ever, but also one of the most exciting."Continue reading Watch how an Ariel Atom 300 defines trackday perfectionWatch how an Ariel Atom 300 defines trackday perfection originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 19:58:00 EST. DOE's Steven Chu says $25,000, 140-mile electric car might be here in 10 years
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy, USA Here's some non-news: the Department of Energy Secretary, Steven Chu, supports plug-in vehicles. Want proof? Click here, here or here. Want to know how he can still get headlines? By saying that electric cars that offer twice the range of the Nissan Leaf (so, around 140 miles) while costing $25,000, "is a very real price that we can maybe achieve in a decade." Chu made the statement in a DOE workshop in Dearborn, MI last week. Is Chu being too ambitious and positive here? Hard to know for sure, but he's been even further out there before. In 2011, he said, "To buy a car that will cost $20,000 to $25,000 without a subsidy where you can go 350 miles is our goal" possibly by 2017. Chu also admitted in Dearborn that plug-in vehicles are too expensive today, calling out the Leaf for being $10,000 too much for many buyers. Plug In Cars reports that the tone of the speech "suggests that [Chu] believes that plug-in cars with relatively smaller batteries, and a back-up gas engine on board to extend range, might be a more feasible way to bring down costs." The West Coast Energy Secretary Tesla Motors' Elon Musk has other ideas.DOE's Steven Chu says $25,000, 140-mile electric car might be here in 10 years originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 19:36:00 EST. Official: McLaren Automotive looks back on its first year
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, MISC It's been one heck of a first year for McLaren Automotive. Since setting up shop twelve months ago, the Formula One team's new sportscar-making unit has sold over 1,000 examples of the MP4-12C supercar, but that's not the sum total of its achievements. To get there, McLaren set up a global network of 38 brand-spanking-new dealerships in a total of 22 countries, including those in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and right here in North America. The newest British automaker orchestrated it all from its new facility in Woking, right next door to the F1 team's headquarters, which was officially opened by the British prime minister. And while it was at it, McLaren also set up the Special Operations division to build even more unique versions of its supercars like the High Sport, as well as its own racing division to handle the MP4-12C GT3 that's taking on racing series around the world. Oh, and Macca rolled out an upgrade of the 12C while it was still in its infancy as well. Not bad for a year's work, and we can't wait to see what next year brings. Recent rumors have included a roadster version of the 12C and even a supposed shooting brake of some sort in the works, but the biggest splash will be made when the successor to the mighty McLaren F1 jumps into the pool. Watch this space.Continue reading McLaren Automotive looks back on its first yearMcLaren Automotive looks back on its first year originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 19:30:00 EST. Official: New Mazda Flairwagon offers nothing of the sort
Filed under: Budget, Minivan/Van, Wagon, Japan, Mazda Joining the AZ-Wagon, AZ-Offroad, Carol and delightfully named Scrum Wagon, Mazda has completed its micro-mini line-up with this, the Flairwagon. Underneath the badging this is actually a Suzuki Palette, a five-door, four-seater kei car introduced in Japan in 2008. It appears Mazda has maintained most of the Palette's option sheet, so depending on trim the Flairwagon is available with either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged 660-cc VVT engine, front-wheel drive or full-time all-wheel drive, keyless entry and pushbutton start, Hill Hold Control and Stop/Start, a cold storage glove box, folding rear seat, and a power sliding rear door on the left. The only transmission on offer will be a CVT. That's the top tier IS Limited Edition trim pictured above, and even it looks like it keeps its flair on the inside - which probably isn't such a bad thing. Scroll down to read a press release with more info on it.Continue reading New Mazda Flairwagon offers nothing of the sortNew Mazda Flairwagon offers nothing of the sort originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 19:00:00 EST. Report: Supreme Court refuses to hear Kia appeal
Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Government/Legal, Kia Almost a year to the day after the second-generation Kia Sephia was hit with a $40 million jury award in a faulty seatbelt case, the inexpensive Korean is on the wrong side of another court verdict. This time it has to do with the brakes on the 1997-2000 Sephias, which were accused of wearing out too quickly. An owner in Pennsylvania sued, led to a class-action case against Kia and a Pennsylvania court awarding each of the 9,400 plaintiffs $600 in reimbursement, with the judgment totaling some $5.6 million. After 11 years of the case and appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear it, rendering the verdict final. That's not the end of Kia's involvement in the matter, though: Sephia owners in other states have also brought suit, with claimants in New Jersey due to receive up to $750 each for the same issue.Supreme Court refuses to hear Kia appeal originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 18:32:00 EST. Report: Carjacker who can't drive stick gets ride from victim
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Safety Note to budding carjackers: Learn to drive a stick shift before heading out to boost a car. Note to potential carjacking victims: If the thief can't drive a stick, run away and call the cops. Unfortunately our advice is a little too late for a couple of guys in St. Louis. According to the Associated Press, on Sunday, a motorist was approached in his vehicle by an armed man, who ordered him to move to the passenger seat and demanded his money. The victim handed over $24, at which point the would-be carjacker tried to drive off in the car. Unfortunately for the miscreant (who is obviously not an Autoblog reader), he was totally stymied by the manual transmission. Either not wanting to get shot or in an effort to save his clutch, the victim reportedly offered to drive the bad guy to his destination. It was either a genius move or there's more to the story than we know. Either way, when the robber exited the car, he was at least polite enough to thank the guy for a ride. Who says you can't point guns at folks, take their money and still be nice?Carjacker who can't drive stick gets ride from victim originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 18:00:00 EST. Strong majority of Americans support higher gas tax to improve roads
Filed under: Legislation and Policy, USAThink of it this way: a teenager cruising in a convertible down Pacific Coast Highway will probably be pretty big on smooth roads. That's sort of the gist of a survey from the Mineta National Transit Research Consortium, which polled more than 1,500 people on their attitudes toward taxation, specifically as it relates to road improvements (get it here). The 104-page study revealed that, in general, respondents from the West were the most supportive of taxes, while those from the Northeast were the least supportive. Additionally, those in the younger age group (here, 18-to-24-years-old) were the most in favor of either gas, sales or mileage taxes, while the 55-plus group was the least supportive. What do they want the extra funds to be used for? 58 percent said they'd support a 10-cents-a-gallon tax increase if the money was used specifically for road maintenance, while just 20 percent supported such a tax for general transportation purposes. Additionally, a half-cent sales tax was more than twice as popular as either a 1 cent-per-mile mileage tax or a 10-cent-a-gallon gas tax.Continue reading Strong majority of Americans support higher gas tax to improve roadsStrong majority of Americans support higher gas tax to improve roads originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 17:46:00 EST. Official: UK gets Mazda MX-5 Miata Kuro special edition
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Mazda, UK The word "kuro" means "black" in Japanese, and several special edition kuro models have made there way to the UK from Japanese automakers in the past few years: the Nissan Juke Kuro last year and the Mazda RX-8 Kuro in 2007. Mazda has gone back to black with the MX-5 Kuro, but unlike those other cars, this one is oddly available in Crystal White Pearlescent, as well as Velocity Red Mica and Brilliant Black. It will come in either 124-horsepower, 1.8-liter soft top or 158-hp 2.0-liter Roadster Coupe forms (read: retractable hardtop). Sportiness is the brief, but while the softie gets a five-speed manual, the Roadster Coupe bags a six-speed manual, limited-slip differential and side airbags. Upgraded spec for both variants throws in a new rear bumper with larger exhaust tips, "race car inspired exterior" graphics, 17-inch gunmetal wheels, along with Brilliant Black side mirrors, roof and trim. Inside, the black treatment is contrasted with stone-colored leather on the heated seats, as well as red stitching and alongside alloy pedals. Climate control will come standard. Just 200 examples of the £18,495 soft top ($28,905 U.S., inclusive of UK VAT) will be on offer when it goes on sale July 1, while 400 examples of the £21,995 Coupe Roadster ($34,375) can be had. Scroll down for a press release with more info. Report: Mazda builds final rotary engine
Filed under: Classics, Plants/Manufacturing, Mazda Mark it down, auto enthusiasts. Mazda built its last rotary engine on Friday, June 22. By final, we mean the line that assembled Renesis engines for Mazda's RX-8 sports car was idled, and there are currently no plans to restart its production. Mazda has a long-running history of building Wankel powerplants, and its production of the high-revving engine has seen a few stutters since Mazda put the first dual-rotor Wankel in a production car in 1967. Of course, it's always possible that Mazda finds a way to solve - or at least drastically improve - the failings of the Renesis: high fuel consumption and poor emissions. We've been hearing about the so-called 16X rotary for years, and we'd love to see it enter production at some point in the not-terribly-distant future. For now, though, join us in remembering some of Mazda's past rotary-powered machinery in the image galleries above and below. Even if the world never sees another production rotary, at least it's been a good ride.Mazda builds final rotary engine originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 16:57:00 EST. Report: New owners still struggling to secure rights to use Saab name
Filed under: China, Europe, Government/Legal, Japan, Plants/Manufacturing, Saab Not to state the obvious, but if you're going to buy an automaker, it's probably advisable to secure rights to use the name. That's what the new owners of Saab are trying to work out after buying the iconic Swedish automaker earlier this month, Automotive News reports. National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), the Chinese-Japanese conglomerate, acquired the company's physical assets, including its factory in Trollhättan, but didn't get rights to use the Saab name and logo. Truckmaker Scania and defense company Saab AB maintain the name and logo rights, and will need to sign off on NEVS using it, according to the publication. The parties are in discussions. Saab, which made its first cars in 1947, was acquired out of bankruptcy earlier this month. The new ownership group, led by ex-Volvo Trucks chief Karl-Erling Trogen, is planning on turning the company into an electric vehicle maker and will likely start with a battery-electric powered 9-3 in 2014.New owners still struggling to secure rights to use Saab name originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 16:32:00 EST. Motorsports: Pikes Peak Hill Climb facing cancellation over Colorado wildfires?
Filed under: Motorsports, Etc., Safety The 90th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is in danger of being postponed or cancelled altogether as wildfires close in on Colorado Springs. The Waldo Canyon fire, which began several days ago and is ravaging the mountains just west of the city, has already burned more than 15,000 acres and is only five percent contained. Unusually hot weather, a lack of rain and persistent winds have made the blaze difficult to control, and more more than 32,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate. Highway 24, the road leading up to the base of Pikes Peak, is currently closed. "We are cautiously optimistic concerning the running of the 90th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on July 8 after an informative and thorough meeting this morning with Mayor Steve Bach and officials from the City of Colorado Springs," said Tom Osborne, Chairman of the Board of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, in a statement released by the event yesterday. "We are in consistent touch with these officials, and monitoring the constantly developing situation related to the wildfires." Autoblog spoke with Mike Moran, senior media consultant for the PPIHC, about the current status of the event today, and he is still uncertain what will happen. "This is now under the control of the federal government and other agencies," he told us. "We met yesterday with the mayor and came away optimistic, but we don't know what nature is going to bring here. The authorities are well aware of the hill climb and the resources needed to support it, but the first thing in our mind is safety." Moran says organizers will let race fans and participants know about the status of the hill climb as soon as they can. "We'll know in plenty of time to let everyone know, and we're getting to that point. I expect in the next 24-48 hours we will know something."Continue reading Pikes Peak Hill Climb facing cancellation over Colorado wildfires?Pikes Peak Hill Climb facing cancellation over Colorado wildfires? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 16:00:00 EST.
