It will feature a unique look, a lush red interior and nearly every bell and whistle Ford can muster, surpassing the high-end Ford Platinum F-150. "There's still a strong demand for luxury pickups and the Limited will help us meet that demand," said Ford spokesman Mike Levine. Indeed, Ford says 30 percent of its pickup sales are the luxury trucks it offers such as the Lariat, Harley Davidson and King Ranch models. Each has carved out a niche, appealing to the inner street racer, biker or cowboy in need of a pickup. Currently, a Platinum F-150 rings up the top price of all F-150s, starting at $44,635. But the Limited will exceed that with its standard loaded up interior that includes everything from a moonroof and aluminum trim to heated and cooled seats. It will also outperform its predecessor, the 2011 F-150 Limited. Ford has added its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 under this new model's red hood, giving it 365 horsepower and up to 22 mpg on the highway. There's also standard HID headlamps, 22-inch polished aluminum wheels and that special branding of the word "Limited" on the rear quarter panel. And, as any budding internet video machine (over 140 million YouTube views for Block's Gymkhana series) can tell you, a web video is hardly a web video unless it's first been teased. The drives were far too short, everyone agreed (most were just 10 minutes long), but people made the best of it, including our companions over at Engadget, where Myriam Joire says, "you don't have to be a car nut to appreciate all the innovation and technology that's gone into Tesla's sophomore vehicle." She continues, "So what's it like to drive the Model S? In a word: amazing. ... The Model S is surprisingly nimble for such a large and heavy automobile, and it doesn't sacrifice ride quality for the sake of dynamics - it handled rough roads with composure and just the right amount of stiffness." Our favorite bit is this one: "Acceleration is where the Model S shines. The electric motor dishes out gobs of linear, head-snapping torque, quickly propelling you past the speed limit - you've been warned." We're working on getting some real Autoblog seat time, but for now we look at other first impressions from around the internet, which are universally positive, something that's darn hard to come by in this day and age: Motor Trend calls it, "an out-of-this-world sedan that happens to be electric" and adds that, "after a walk through the factory, a visit to a dealer showroom, and an hour-and-a-half spent driving the car on a mix of roads, my eyes are wide and my jaw has dropped." CNet says that upon, "seeing a straight road ahead I ... let the pedal meet the floor. The Model S felt like a freight train, with inexorable acceleration pushing forward without a break. There were no power peaks - it was all torque all the time." GigaOm says, "The low center of gravity, smooth ride, and lack of vibration were pretty amazing." Yahoo! News reports that, "the Tesla Model S successfully challenges a century of assumptions about what a great car can be" and that, "from behind the wheel of the Tesla Model S, you feel you're driving the future, instead of burning increasingly limited gallons of the past." Our old friend Damon Lavrinc, now at Wired, says, "if our brief seat time is any indication, Tesla hasn't just delivered a functional, all-electric sedan - it's made a luxury EV that can outpace and outclass the stalwarts of the premium sports sedan segment, while changing the perceptions of electric mobility. It's also a complete hoot to drive." USA Today makes it simple: "There's no other way to put it: Tesla's Model S luxury sedan is spectacular." What you read there, in other words, is a paradigm being shifted. | Posted: 25 Jun 2012 04:32 PM PDT  Study: Honda tops Ford as America's favorite auto brand in new survey Filed under: Etc., Honda, Mercedes-Benz Market research firm Harris Interactive has revealed that Mercedes-Benz and Honda are the two strongest auto brands in America according to its survey of more than 38,000 people. The survey, known as the 2012 Harris EquiTrend study, puts a number to all of those warm and fuzzy feelings people have toward a particular brand as a way to measure its equity. Broken down a different way, the survey points out that American's favorite automotive brands are German and Japanese. Mercedes took top honors in the Luxury Automotive Brand of the Year for the second year in a row. It was followed by BMW, Lexus, Cadillac and Acura. In the Full Line Automotive Brand of the Year category, Honda grabbed the top spot, beating out Toyota, Ford (last year's winner), Chevrolet and Nissan. (Apparently Harris' definition of "full line" differs a bit from ours, as brands like Subaru and Hyundai were also included). Harris doesn't provide much guidance about what sort of questions it asked to survey takers, but the final results seems to closely resemble America's sales totals as well. This suggests people tend to like what they buy, or at least like what they've bought. Mike Cross, Jaguar's head of vehicle integrity, will be piloting the all-aluminum convertible up the hill, and we guess he'll probably have the 380-horsepower, supercharged V6 underhood that we'll see when the production car is introduced next year, though a V8 is also possible. We're just hoping that Jag sees fit to delete the F-filled camouflage on the model seen above and show us the car in all its glory. Jaguar's new kid should fit nicely with this year's Goodwood theme of "young guns." This is the third body style to feature the automaker's HYbrid4 technology, the others being the DS5 and the 3008. The four-wheel-drive diesel-electric spits out just 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer, Peugeot says, from a 2-liter HDi diesel engine that offers 120 kW (163 horsepower) alongside a 27-kW (37-hp) electric motor. That's the same set-up that has been the heart of the HYbrid4 powerplant since the system was launched in 2009. If you're more used to mpg numbers than CO2/km, that's about equivalent to 65 miles per U.S. gallon. The car also has an all-electric mode, alongside "Auto," "Sport" and "4WD," but details on this option were not disclosed. Price, too, has not yet been revealed. Viendo que no sale rentable, marcas como Toyota han tomado medidas y exportarán desde otros lugares. El Yaris que se pueda adquirir en breve en los Estados Unidos será fabricado en las instalaciones francesas de Valenciennes. Según ha confirmado Toyota serán unas 25.000 unidades las que anualmente salten el charco y para ello se hará una inversión de ocho millones de euros en la planta para adaptarla al nuevo modelo, pues aunque casi idéntico al "nuestro", cuenta con algunas modificaciones estéticas y mecánicas (caja de cambios y motor específicos principalmente). Toyota has announced it will manufacture U.S. and Canadian-spec Yaris models in its Onnaing-Valenciennes facility in France. The plant has been producing the Yaris hatchback for European buyers since 2001, though this marks the first time in Toyota history that the automaker has built a vehicle in Europe and imported the model to the States. North American-spec Yaris models differ slightly from their European counterparts. In addition to using different fascia designs front and rear, the NA model comes available with an automatic transmission and a market-specific 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. There is some differentiation in safety equipment between the two models as well. Japanese automakers have recently revealed that building cars in Japan and exporting them around the globe is quickly becoming a money-losing proposition. On the other, you have the equivalent of 17 horsepower. None of those figures would keep Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe from getting to the bottom line, which was to see if he could make the Twizy drift. Before you ask, no, the video does not contain any electronic music nor a panda in a suit. But it's still worth watching the segment below. A report in Car and Driver as to the future of the A6 2.0-liter turbo might not get the model much more press, but could get it more sales. The 211-horsepower four-cylinder has only been available with a CVT and front-wheel drive; now an eight-speed automatic and Quattro appear on the option sheet. C/D says will be a surprisingly modest $2,200 premium to move up from the FWD model to the Quattro, with $45,295 needed for the 2.0's base Premium trim - but since the front-drive CVT model will continue to be offered, we're not sure if the eight-speed Tiptronic will be a cost option as well. Even if so, there should still be a healthy stack of Benjamins between it and its German competition, and the addition of Quattro isn't expected to knock it from the top spot in fuel economy among its luxury foes. CarMD has published its newest report ranking average state-by-state repair costs to correct check engine lights, and Wyoming leads the nation. The info was collected from about 163,000 repairs made by ASE-certified technicians who report to CarMD, and in 2011, labor costs were down while parts costs were up, and people still ignore "idiot lights" at their own peril. Going from a chump-change repair cost to a straight-up chump is the trend for Ostrich Syndrome drivers. CarMD notes that catalytic converter replacement is creeping up the list. An expensive repair, this can be brought on by neglecting to fix smaller problems, like the most-common repair CarMD found: replacing the oxygen sensor. Some other facts and inferences: New Hampshire drivers paid the least for repairs to correct CEL issues, while Texans paid virtually the exact average. All of the highest-cost states for the 2011 numbers were in the west, and you can keep reading to see where your state falls on the list. Traditionally, in many areas, only utilities have that right because of, we've heard, unscrupulous landlords who overcharged their tenants. Of course, if you're a landlord today who wants to install an electric vehicle charging station, how do you legally sell your tenants the juice? Colorado has an answer. A new state law will take effect in August whereby, for $5,000, you can get a permit to sell electricity at a vehicle recharging station. Given that around 1,200 EVs are registered in the state, Governor John Hickenlooper says the new law will encourage more businesses to install vehicle chargers. The Denver Post reports that there are around 60 charging stations in the state ("most" of them currently free), including 40 at various Walgreens. Dave Altman, regional development and government sales chief for Eaton, told the paper that he expects $1-an-hour battery charging to become a reality soon. Earlier this month, Audi released a video about the e-tron pilot project featuring the plug-in A3 hatchback in Colorado. | Posted: 25 Jun 2012 12:36 PM PDT  Report: Jeep Grand Cherokee to have short 2013 model year ahead of major updates Filed under: Crossover, JeepJeep is planning an upgraded Grand Cherokee for the 2014 model year, and since the automaker is anxious to get the freshened model out to customers, the popular sport utility will have a shortened 2013 model year. According to Automotive News, dealers are just now ordering the 2013 models, and they are scheduled to start production in August. The biggest change for 2014 will be the availability of a 3.0-liter diesel V6, which we previewed just over one year ago. In the European Grand Cherokee, this engine produces 241 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque - seriously good power numbers for Jeep's stalwart utility vehicle. Additionally, Automotive News reports that a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic is on deck for 2014. Details are scarce right now, but this transmission will likely be paired with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, just like in the 2013 Ram 1500 and the current Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. Vandaag greep een 2-jarig jongetje de kans van zijn nog prille leven. Toen papa hem alleen achterliet in zijn auto (met de sleutels erin) lukte het deze jonge coureur om de Opel Corsa te starten en in beweging te krijgen. As part of its own development of driver assistance systems, General Motors has begun to look driver behavior behind the wheels of self-driving vehicles; innovations like Cadillac semi-autonomous Super Cruise are designed to "ease the driver's workload" on the highway, but it will be good to know what drivers plan on doing to occupy their time. The main finding so far is that "Staying aware [is] considered key to autonomous vehicle operation," which would seem to make the most basic kind of sense, but the additional assessment is that "driver attentiveness can be improved through advanced driver assistance and safety features." Basically, the more your car does for you, the more it will need to be able to do in order to ensure everyone's safety. The driver aids that will be available on the 2013 Cadillac ATS this year and the 2014 XTS next year continue the march toward self-driving cars, which some predict might come as soon as this decade. Ideally, this partnership would be with another manufacturer that Volvo would agree to share small car development costs with. "In the medium term, five to six years, we need to find a proper solution in North America," Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said in an interview with BusinessWeek. "Building a plant in ourselves is maybe more unlikely. I'm looking for a partner that could help us utilize a North American plant." Volvo has reportedly been in talks with a "couple" of manufacturers and is "open to everybody," Jacoby stated, later specifically cited Fiat as a possible solution, since the Italian carmaker is already active in the United States through the Chrysler Group. In the meantime, Volvo - like many automakers - is expanding its production in China.
