Carlos Ghosn podría retirarse en cinco años
Filed under: Nissan, Renault, IndustriaGracias a Ghosn tenemos el GT-R o los nuevos Z en el mercado Si nos pidieran elegir dos CEOs famosos del mundo del automóvil, que se pasan buena parte de su tiempo en los medios, estos serían sin duda Sergio Marchionne y Carlos Ghosn, autores de dos de las recuperaciones de fabricantes más famosas de las últimas décadas. El primero sacó a Fiat del agujero cuando parecía que tras General Motors iba camino de la quiebra. El segundo cogió a Nissan perdiendo miles de millones de euros, tras la compra por parte de Renault de la mitad del fabricante japonés, y la convirtió en una empresa no sólo rentable, sino que ahora mismo es el hilo de vida para la casa del rombo francés. Pues bien, según cuentan los propios directivos de Nissan, Carlos Ghosn (que también es CEO de Renault) habría confirmado que no puede comprometerse más allá del actual plan estratégico de la compañía, por lo que su marcha podría producirse al término del actual plan "Power88", al que le quedan cinco años de recorrido. Nissan (y Renault) deberán buscar sucesores válidos desde ya mismo para formarlos de acuerdo a las necesidades de un buen CEO, aunque como el propio Ghosn reconocía en una de sus biografías, que hemos tenido el placer de leer, dentro de sus actividades frecuentes está la de formar a un pequeño grupo de "elegidos" para que uno de ellos pueda ser su sucesor a medio plazo. Filed under: Porsche, Cupés, DeportivosPincha la imagen para ver la galería El nuevo Powerkit para el 911 de Porsche lo vimos anticipado hace unos días en exclusiva en el 911 Club Coupe, una edición limitada conmemorativa realizada para homenajear a los clubs de la marca alemana. Ahora se convierte en un accesorio común para todos los propietarios de un 911 Carrera S (o los que estén pensando en adquirir uno y lo quieran montar de serie desde la fábrica). El kit de potenciación lleva el motor del Carrera S hasta los 430 caballos (+30) consiguiendo el 0 a 100 por hora en 4 segundos rasos y una punta de 306/308 km/h (la primera cifra con el cambio PDK, la segunda con el manual). Unas nuevas culatas, árboles de levas, sistema de distribución variable escape, radiador de aceite y centralita de control electrónico del motor son lo que hace la diferencia de potencia, que según Porsche no tiene incidencia en el consumo. En las imágenes de la galería el Carrera S recibe además el kit aerodinámico opcional para redondear el producto un poco más. First, there are the gigantor pickups with their loud and burly turbodiesel engines. Second, there are the diesel fuel misers, such as Volkswagen's stable of TDI mobiles. In Europe, though, nearly every car is available with at least one optional diesel engine, and many of those are considered performance models. Of course, there's also a fertile aftermarket community willing to turn any diesel engine into a mouth-breathing torque monster, and all it usually takes is the installation of a massive turbocharger. Take, for instance, the Mercedes-Benz OM603 and OM606 inline-six-cylinder engines. As you can see in the three videos below, there's plenty of tire-shredding performance hidden inside these otherwise plebeian powerplants, whether housed in the engine bay of a Mercedes or an old Volvo. This is the brand-new Tesla Model S touch screen
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors Earlier this month, venture capitalist and Tesla board member Steve Jurvetson took delivery of the first 2012 Tesla Model S to leave the factory. Now, he's sharing his early peek (deliveries officially start tomorrow) of the production version of the electric car's giant touch screen dashboard through a photo on Flickr. In the picture (click to enlarge), we can see how the screen can be broken into two parts, one for navigation of the internet, the other for real-world navigation (i.e., maps). We see "tabs" for music, phone, energy and camera also available on the top of the screen, and we're confident there are options to adjust all sorts of settings somewhere. We will learn more about this later on. For now, let's hope that, in the real world, this screen works much better than the one in the Fisker Karma does. Jurvetson writes that the Google map here is so different that, "It's a bit surreal to drive with satellite view zoomed in to the max. You can see the parking lot and nearby environs in a way that is so much more contextually interesting than a desktop big screen." He adds: Another interesting cloud service is the album art display (here seen to the right of the speedometer, but normally on the big screen for me). No matter what the music source (radio, satellite, internet from overseas or personalized channels, bluetooth from your phone, or as in this case, MP3s on a thumb drive in one of the USB ports), the car sends a music sample for sound recognition and fetches a high-res image of the album art and the song's metadata, so the song process bar and title are part of the display. We've known since early 2011 that the 17-inch Model S touch screen will use low-power Nivdia Tegra chips. Slash Gear says that a pair Visual Computing Modules (VCM) "bursting with graphics power" drive the two screens in the car. Rumormill: Acura RLX revealed in production form by patent filing

Then again, the 2014 Acura RLX is the replacement for the Acura RL, the least interesting luxury sedan extant. (And yes, we're including Lincoln in that assessment.)Car and Driver says these images were pulled from a European patent database, claiming that this is, in fact, the new RLX that will go on sale next year. The car pictured in these images adheres quite closely to the RLX Concept displayed at this year's New York Auto Show, with only slight changes to the front and rear fascias and more generic wheels. The side character line that runs from the top of the fender back to the rear door is there, as is the rest of the shape. In between bashing Acura for its dull design, C&D speculates that the Honda luxury brand may show the production RLX at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Report: Women embezzles $10M from car dealer, buys 2011 Honda Crosstour
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal You almost have to feel sorry for Patricia Smith, the former controller at Baierl Acura who embezzled over $10 million from the suburban Pittsburgh dealership. Despite having stolen roughly $4,000 a day, seven days a week, for seven years, Smith's personal automotive aspirations extended no further than a new Honda Crosstour. Apparently being a criminal mastermind does not ensure good taste. According to Automotive News, Smith did buy the requisite fleet of vehicles normally associated with so much dirty money but she gave away nine of the ten - including a ragtop Shelby Mustang for her husband. The 58-year-old woman's purchases also included charter flights to Europe and the Caribbean, Super Bowl tickets, four houses, and an autographed first edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, according to the report. Her spending spree extended into the ridiculous, as Smith paid for a VIP Mass with the Pope, lunch catered by the Barefoot Contessa, and dinner with Kevin Spacey. Throughout all this profligate spending, Smith was earning a $53,000 annual salary, according to the report. She explained away her newfound wealth by saying she had invested in airline stock and worked as an online travel agent. Yet the woman was not exactly caught red-handed by her employer, as you might expect. After an e-mail from the dealership CFO questioned her accounting, she quit, and then confessed her crimes to the U.S. Attorney's office shortly thereafter, according to the report. The supercar manufacturer has officially rolled out the configurator for the new Vanquish, and while the options are limited to a gaggle of colors, a few wheel choices and some carbon fiber trim, it's still fun to figure out just how annoying we can make the new ultra luxury machine. Sadly, the company doesn't offer a paisley vinyl wrap to match our smoking jackets. The online tool doesn't allow you to play with the interior options either, but the site does give visitors a good idea of what to expect from the cabin. Quilted leather seats in hues from tame to obscene and plenty of fine details are par for the course. Buyers can look forward to 556 horsepower from a 6.0-liter V12 as well as a chassis that's a full 25-percent stiffer than anything else on the VH platform. How much will it cost? Who knows, but it will hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 183 mph. Study: These car colors attract the most bird poop
Filed under: Etc., UK A new study has revealed red cars attract more bird droppings than any other color. The research, conducted by online retailer Halfords, revealed red vehicles made up 18 percent of cars marked by birds, while blue followed along in second place at 14 percent. Green vehicles got off the easiest, making up just one percent of those in the study. The sample included 1,140 cars in Brighton, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Bristol, though there's no indication as to the total number of each car color in the group. The study also asked owners how quickly they removed bird droppings from their vehicle's paint. Only one in six said they took care of the problem immediately, while more than half waited until the next car wash. Halfords says leaving the strongly alkali substance on your vehicle's paint work can lead to costly repairs. The company estimates owners spend around $89.3 million per year in damaged paint. A product that allows windows to use natural or artificial light to generate electricity got a little closer to commercialization after a Maryland-based company working with the U.S. Department of Energy found a way to lower the cost of production. New Energy Technologies Inc., along with the Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), found a way to reduce the cost of what they call see-through solar cells that allow glass to produce electricity when coated with "an organic solar array composed of a series of ultra-small solar cells measuring less than ¼ the size of a grain of rice each." The product - called, descriptively, SolarWindow - can now be produced at lower temperatures and under "ambient" pressure, New Energy Technologies says. The company had also worked with the University of South Florida on the project. Eventually, New Energy Technology, which is publicly traded, is looking to commercialize the product for potential use on 85 million U.S. homes and commercial buildings. Report: Bernie Ecclestone facing legal scuffle after ex-banker admits accepting bribes

Gerhard Gribkowsky, the former deputy chief of regional bank Bayern Landesbank, testified in exchanged for a reduced sentence in the case against him. Gribkowsky faced up to 15 years in prison on charges of corruption and abuse of trust. Prosecutors agreed to reduce his maximum penalty to nine years behind bars in exchange for his testimony. Gribkowsky was in charge of the sale of BayernLB's stake in F1 back in 2006. Seven months ago, Ecclestone testified under immunity that he had paid Gribkowsky in order to avoid a tax inquiry by the United Kingdom. The F1 executive denies that the payments were bribes, but says that if he had not paid, Gribkowsky would have told UK tax authorities about issues with the sale that could have led to an inquiry.
