Dragon Racing demanda a Lotus
Filed under: Lotus Los problemas se siguen apilando para Lotus. Este año la compañía británica volvía a la Indy con un motor desarrollado con su dinero por parte de Judd. El problema es que el proyecto ya empezó con mal pie, con retrasos y fallos técnicos. Hace unas semanas te contamos que los chicos de Hethel habían decidido reducir su apoyo oficial a sólo dos equipos de dos coches, para conseguir concentrar esfuerzos. Pero ahora Dragon Racing, uno de esos dos equipos que quedaban, (el otro es HVM), ha demandado a Lotus por valor de 4,6 millones de dólares (3,6 millones de euros). ¿Las razones? Pues las hay de todos los colores. El equipo dirigido por Jay Penske (hijo de Roger Penske nada menos) se queja de que Lotus ha incumplido varias partes del contrato que firmaron con ellos, empezando por no haber suministrado dos chasis Dallara, tal y como se habían comprometido. Además, Lotus ha fallado en la entrega en fecha de las mecánicas, y ha exigido más dinero por ellas que el acordado. A pesar de pagar ese extra, Lotus no ha cumplido tampoco con las entregas. Ante esta situación, Dragon Racing ha decidido romper por lo sano, devolver todo el equipamiento a Hethel, buscar un nuevo proveedor e interponer la demanda. Claudio Berro debe estar ardiendo... Y todo en un momento en el que lo único bueno que sabemos de Lotus es que el Esprit sigue en desarrollo, y al menos se vuelven a fabricar coches en la factoría. ¿Cómo acabará esto? Honda wins appeal in Civic Hybrid fuel mileage case
Filed under: Green Culture, Hybrid, Honda A judge has reversed a lower court ruling against Honda over the automaker's fuel economy claims. Heather Peters successfully sued Honda in small-claims court in February, claiming her 2006 Civic Hybrid didn't return the advertised 50 miles per gallon Environmental Protection Agency rating. Peters was awarded $9,867 in damages in the lawsuit, but now Judge Dudley W. Gray II of the state Superior Court in Torrence, California, has reversed the lower court's ruling. Honda has offered owners a settlement in a larger class-action suit, paying out either $100 or $200 depending on the vehicle and as much as $1,500 toward the purchase of a new Honda. The 510-horsepower machine spends a little time frolicking through an industrial complex before taking to an open stretch of track for a little more fun. The entire clip is appropriately shot in black and white and set to the riotous tones of the hefty 6.2-liter V8 banging off the limiter. Not a bad way to blow two minutes of your day. As you may recall, Chris Harris recently lined the C63 AMG Black Series up against bruisers like Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the BMW M3 GTS for a little German showdown. Harris found the C63 to be a willing dance partner with appropriate levels of presence on the street, but still found the machine out gunned by the track-bred Porsche. Video: Japanese man makes the best Transformers model we've ever seen
Filed under: Etc., Japan, Videos, Toys/Games Michael Bay's Transformers were true enough (for a Bay production, at least) to the original articles in their car and robot states, but their transforming sequences were epilepsy-inducing explosions of cranks and gears that made no sense at all. Admittedly, it didn't stop us from enjoying the first movie. But the work of a Japanese modeler is what we've been looking for: his Transformer takes us all the way back to the original eightes series when Bumblebee was a Volkswagen Beetle. This is version eight, fitted with 22 servo motors - it even throws punches and does a jig - and we're told that version nine is on the way. We'd like to humbly request that all research on flying cars stops, and every resource be poured into a production version of this right now. Report: Woman sued for sending text message to driver who crashed
Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety Hiring a lawyer is like hiring a hitman. Except it's not against the law. A lawyer's job is to exert your will on your legal opponent - and on the legal system itself. So it should come as no surprise to see this evolution of distracted driving case law: The victims of a traffic accident have filed a lawsuit against both the motorist and the woman he was texting with when he caused the crash, according to the Huffington Post. Let's just state for the record that we have no horse in this race, which is not unlike any other personal injury suit in which the plaintiff's attorney rounds up anyone and everyone that might be named as a defendant. The difference here, however, is that this is the first time we're aware of someone being accused of being an accomplice to the breaking of distracted driving laws and causing a crash without even being in the car. The driver, Kyle Best, a 19-year-old at the time of the accident, has already pled guilty to three violations of New Jersey law, including using a mobile phone while driving, careless driving, and leaving his lane, according to the report. Best hit a couple on a motorcycle with his pickup truck, resulting in both the man and woman losing their left legs. At the time, Best was exchanging text messages with Shannon Colonna, according to phone records. The couple's lawyer is arguing that Colonna knew she was texting Best while he was driving, and that her behavior is no different than if she had been having a conversation with him in the car, according to the report. Her attorney, however, maintains that she can't be liable for the driver's decision to read the text when it was not safe to do so and that she did not realize the dangers of texting while driving. The judge in the case is expected to decide whether Colonna can be included in the suit on May 25, according to the report. Certainly this case is a complicated one, and could have broad ramifications on distracted driving lawsuits as well as further legislation on the issue. Although it's received many refinements, there is still a strong similarity between the final design and the prototype, with lots of sexy to be seen in the naked streetfighter. Since we've already seen the specs, the first question everyone wants to know is, "How much?" A lot. $18,995 for the Empulse R and $16,995 for the Empulse, to be exact. For that two grand difference you get fully adjustable suspension instead of semi-adjustable, along with carbon fiber construction of fenders and other body panel bits instead of plastic. You also get to take delivery this year. Initial orders for the R will start dribbling out in June, with the production floodgates opening in July. The wait for the more affordable machine is expected to last until January 2013. Brammo is bullish on the numbers it will eventually ship. Speaking with CNN, CEO Craig Bramscher says he expects to sell upwards of 60,000 units across the entire product line and become a billion-dollar company within a few years. Hey, you gotta have goals. Back to that price tag. It's steep, no doubt about it, but we think with good reason. Besides the big 10.2 kWh battery pack and breakthrough six-speed gearbox, your hard-earned cash is buying you top-notch components in places that count. Report: Toyota releases financial results, predicts profits will double in 2012

While Toyota saw sales growth in Europe, Africa, and its home market, North America was a weak point. Though the company still beat its forecast of $2.5 billion, the real excitement surrounds its projections for the next 12 months. Ford ready to triple EcoBoost engine production in Europe

Today, Ford announced it will increase production of EcoBoost-powered vehicles in Europe three-fold in the coming years. In 2011, Ford made 141,000 EcoBoost engines and this number will jump to 480,000 in 2015. To meet expected demand for greener vehicles, Ford started making the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine production in Craiova, Romania today. That's the engine that will make up the bulk of the EcoBoost vehicles: roughly 800,000 of the 1.3 million units Ford will build for Eurpoe between 2012 and 2015. In Europe, the number of Ford models that will have EcoBoost will go from five to ten by 2015. EcoBoost is Ford's first step in greening up its fleet, as you can read all about here. The gist of the strategy is to start by improving ICE vehicles while slowly adding in hybrid and electrified components until something between 10 and 25 percent of Ford's global volume is electrified some time after 2020. Report: Google allowed to test self-driving car on Nevada public streets

The tech giant underwent demonstrations in both Las Vegas and Carson City to prove its vehicles are as safe or safer than those piloted by mere humans. The state requires two people to be in the test vehicles at all times, including at one occupant in the driver's seat and another monitoring the vehicle via an onboard computer. If anything goes wrong, the human "driver" can take over by simply applying the brakes or taking hold of the steering wheel. As of right now, Google has only applied to license three vehicles. Each one will carry a red license plate with an infinity symbol. According to Bruce Breslow, Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles director, vehicles with autonomous capability could be on the road within three to five years. Report: Next Subaru WRX previewed by Japanese Legacy's 2.0L turbo?

Either way, Car and Driver is reporting that when Subaru eventually pulls the wraps off whatever is going to wear the WRX badge, there's going to be a turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter FA-series engine underhood, a derivative of the naturally aspirated engine that's found in the Subaru BRZ. How does the venerable buff book know this? Because the turbo'ed flat-four has already appeared in the Japanese domestic market Legacy, making 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, mated to a continuously variable transmission. C/D says that engine differs from the one in the BRZ in that it uses Subaru's own direct injection system rather than one coming from Toyota. In the standard WRX, horsepower numbers are expected to be a bit lower than in the JDM Legacy, though the STI version will probably see power boosted. GM trademarks Riviera name
Filed under: Buick, GM Autoblog reader Ed sent us this screen shot from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, showing that General Motors has apparently trademarked the name Riviera for use on automobiles. It's no secret that the Riviera name resonates well with anyone familiar with Buick's history, and since the production coupe's death in 1999, the name Riviera has only been resurrected once for the 2007 concept car you see here. So, why is GM registering the Riviera name again? Your guess is as good as ours. As GM Inside News points out, it could be nothing - automakers will, from time to time, trademark a host of words or alphanumeric sequences (Ford, for example, has trademarked everything from MKA to MKZ for potential Lincoln use). Poco dispuesta a dejarse adelantar por compañías como Volkswagen, Pioneer ha anunciado dos nuevos navegadores GPS para automóvil Cyber Navi que aúnan sus conocidas capacidades de realidad aumentada con un sistema HUD basado en láser con la firma de MicroVision para proyectar sobre el parabrisas cualquier dato relevante y a todo color. La imagen ocupa una superficie de 90 x 30 cm y se muestra con una resolución de 720x260 píxeles sobre una lámina transparente situada bajo el parasol del conductor. El efecto conseguido es increíblemente similar al de un videojuego, superponiendo sobre el tráfico real una detallada interfaz en la que se informa al conductor sobre la dirección a tomar, los puntos de interés o la información del tráfico. No, todavía no hay puntos Burnout. Por lo demás, estos nuevos navegadores ofrecerán características tan esperables como conectividad con dispositivos portátiles Apple, reproducción de DVD y sintonización de televisión digital 1Seg, además de soporte para cámaras delanteras (en cuyo caso la información del HUD es replicada en la pantalla del propio navegador). Pioneer no ha dado por ahora información concreta sobre precios, pero el AVIC-VH99HUD debería costar unos 320.000 yenes (3.105 euros al cambio), mientras que el AVIC-ZH99HUD (doble DIN) saldría por 300.000 (2.900 euros). El prototipo de hoy fue capturado en Arizona, EEUU, seguramente haciendo su puesta a punto en climas cálidos antes de su lanzamiento comercial, y por lo que nos deja ver su camuflaje, el XC40 será más crossover que SUV. Having won the grand prix there three times out of the first four it was held, the Prancing Horse marque launched a special-edition 599 there in 2009, followed by an even more exclusive porcelain-finish one-off. For 2012, Ferrari created a special-edition 458 Italia to mark the year of the dragon, and to launch it, the local dealership in Nanjing rented out a section of the Great Wall. It's what they did with it, however, that has local authorities seeing red in more ways than one. Apparently at some point during or after the demonstration, an employee of the dealership got behind the wheel of the limited-edition V8 supercar and pulled some smokey donuts. The problem is that the stunt left tire marks burnt into the ancient surface, leaving authorities understandably upset.
